 Eb clarinet Mouthpieces
Author: Laura Bergen
Date:   2026-03-02 06:43

I have been playing on an HS* Eb clarinet mouthpiece for many years. I realize that that mouthpiece is no longer made and am looking to buy one'

The response is a little stuffy on certain notes but I am able to manage the 5th partial and beyond on this mouthpiece. I have tried mouthpieces in the Vandoren line and have tried a Chedeville. All are too open for me. I tend to underblow the fifth partial and don't have good control. I had tried different setups with these mouthpieces with no avail

Can someone recommend a mouthpiece that responds similarly to an HS* but perhaps a little more evenly responsive throughout the instrument

Thank you for your help

I'd suggest sticking with the Selmer blank you have but getting it refaced by Brad Behn, he'll be able to give it new life and even out the response.

^What donald says.
I had an Selmer alto m'piece refaced by Mr. Gleichweit of Vienna and that turned out excellent.
Generally I feel that the quality of the ebonite is very good on these "classic" Selmer mouthpieces. Though I feel the the various Vandorens are just fine too. Some older Selmers however aren't made all that precisely and it shows....

What instrument do you play? I've tried too many eb clarinets over the years and while they're always a struggle, some seem to make the altissimo impossible to play, at least in tune...
Also, the Légere reeds for eb clarinet can be a great solution if you're struggling with control, but finding the right strength is important. Also, if a refacer makes the table perfectly flat, that'd be ideal for synthetic reeds.

Best regards
Christian
