The small one-man firm in France: JL-Clarinette, is closing down. Its owner, Daniel Joye, is well into retirement age and has medical problems. It's always sad to see the end of a good thing, but what is, in this case, even sadder is that there is no apprentice to take over the firm. He was one of the rare people that made everything from A to Z: keys, design, woodwork, his own tools and machines,...even his own pads! His clarinets are/were (there are quite a few left) superb and affordable.

I agree it is sad to see the company go out of business, esp. if you have/had a personal connection to it.
I am surprised he survived up to now because his operation model seems to be very ineffective. Producing everything in house while competition outsources almost everything to China would make it difficult to survive.
Hopefully, the owner will be able to make the most out of the retirement and improve his health. A true artisan, he deserves the best.

To this day I greatly regret that I couldn't visit JL when in Paris (just before Covid hit the world). I would have loved to have done an article for The Clarinet, also to try his clarinets (I'm STILL looking for the perfect A clarinet!). dn

Donald: Unfortunately, I must admit his A clarinet is not what he did best. I should get points for honesty! Mr. Joye is still around and has a nice stock of clarinets-not at all rejects. If ever you make it to Paris someday soon, please get in touch with me.

Looking for something that does not exist?
