Does anyone know the location of John Denman’s clarinets? I don’t mean the Yamaha clarinets he played in later years but the other ones, the clarinets with the curvy tuning barrels? These are the clarinets he made the recordings of the Finzi Concerto (still the best recording in my opinion) Spohr 2nd Concerto (which I understand he discovered) and the Stamitz B flat concerto (the last two with Hazel Vivienne and Sadlers Wells orchestra). I think John also made a recording of works for clarinet and piano with his wife. I know he also recorded the Bax and Ireland Sonatas which are lovely recordings. Anyway, if anyone knows where these clarinets are, I would be very grateful for the information.

And in the thread mentioned above, you can find that at least John's Bb clarinet had been overhauled in 2012. It was made by Albert, though the unique tuning barrel was made by Ted Planas. No mention of the A of the pair, though. But the Facebook page with this information seems to be run by the family, so with luck they can provide some more information - please let us know what you find out.

Clarinet: John made several recordings with his wife. Among them is a superb recording of the Brahms clarinet sonatas. I imagine that before he switched to Yamaha, he played Boosey 1010s, like most British clarinetists of his age. For a long time, I used his reeds and I wish they were still being made (they were made by Glotin). His widow, the pianist Paula Fann, also passed away rather recently. If you want more information, you could try Michael Fan, violinist in the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Paula's brother.
