 Grabner LB bass clarinet mouthpiece
Author: Jmanola

Hi,

I was gifted a Walter Grabner bass clarinet mouthpiece, the CXZ LB, which I love. Now that Grabner is no longer making mouthpieces, I’m worried about what to do if something happens to it. Is there something similar out there?

Just take care of it. I have played the same Eb mouthpiece (made for me by Brad Behn) since 1996. Twice other players have borrowed it and tried to keep it :-)

It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

There are some others who make great bass mouthpieces. Find another that you like (even if it is not exactly the same) and keep it as a back up

Besides, no two mouthpieces will play identically, even the same model from the same maker

Once in a while there are a few 2nd hand LB mouthpieces for sale out there, and you might be able to snag one if you're lucky.

Alternatively, I've heard anecdotes that Brian Corbin's bass pieces feel like more open versions of Walter Grabner's mouthpieces- I even know one colleague who went from Walter's more open Virtuoso mouthpiece to Brian's closest facing(I use a more open facing by the latter) which is apparently rather similar to the former, so I assume Brian might be able to make an even closer custom facing that is similar to the LB.

I second Brian Corbin’s mouthpieces. I also played a Walter Grabner LB and was in the same situation with being scared to have something happen to it. I tried all of Brian’s mouthpieces recently and purchased an onyx and a Honu in his C1 facing. They are both absolutely fantastic and the Honu has actually become my new main mouthpiece. He does work on a bit of wait because they are all made to order and he likes to talk about your current set up and make the process very personal. Definitely worth the wait.
