I would like to give the tip of my V12 number 3 reeds a very wide cut with sharp corners, so I just thought of the alto sax reed trimmers, RT81 or RT21. I know the width space of these will be wider, and I'll have to center the reed, but I'm not sure if the clarinet V12's reed length will fit. Do you think It will?
I have tried the RT19 which is the proper reed trimmer for V12s. It does make the number 3 kinda like a 3+ would be but the tip's shape changes unfortunately after trimming. I liked how reeds became strength-wise but corners became rounder than they were before. That was negative in reed's response.
Some may suggest changing to different reeds but I wouldn't like to since I've tried many over the years and I find V12s are the best for me, just 3+ strength doesn't exist which would be my preference. In my opinion, It feels wrong Vandoren made 3.5+ and not 3+. There's quite a gap in between 3 and 3.5 and the 3+ I believe would be a much more useful strength aria. When I play 3.5, high notes are secured but flexibility is gone and playing is not as efficient whatever the mouthpiece I play them on. When I play 3, I can play faster and feel more relaxed overall but the very high notes respond with more difficulty after some minutes of playing.
