 Selmer Paris-Omega questions
Author: Pipes

Hello -

I have been a life long sax player and recently have jumped feet first into the clarinet world and am loving it. I have been using a student model that was gifted to me but recently ran across a used Selmer Paris Omega. I have searched and searched and searched for information on this horn but can't find any info. Using Selmer's serial number chart it dates this to 1944-ish but this horn is clearly modern production.

I did find some info saying Selmer did a Paris Omega run in the 1990s and that seems to track with what this instrument would be but I can't find any information as to what it would be compared to, what the original price would have been, and what a fair used price value would be for purchase.

Any help would be appreciated. I have posted a pictures below for reference. Thanks, -Jon

Thank you. I think that is what I found and what prompted me to join the forum here. The only problem with that post is that it is 18 yrs old and doesn't really answer the other questions I have such as the retail price and used price. I am just trying to get a good idea to decide if I should move forward with purchase of this used instrument. Thanks for chiming in :)

From this it would seem that the Omega was at least designed to be at the same level as a Buffet R13 (or Selmer Series 9*). Given that it is relatively unknown and not much discussed, I would expect it to be less expensive than either of those comparisons on the second hand market.

Thanks paulyb, appreciate your insight and the fact it is relatively unknown is the same assumption I was coming up with as compared to something like an R13. Given the used price on this one I think I am going to pass and look into something more along the lines of a used R13 that will be cheaper and a little bit more of a standard for wood clarinets.

This Omega is from the '90s and was a fancy version of the 10SII which was in the same price range as a Buffet R13/RC.

There were also Selmer USA Omega clarinets which were a fancy Signet (or in essence a wooden Bundy) with a garishly engraved bell and possibly gold plated keywork.
