Whelp, I went and gone done something shtoopid the other day. While putting my Legere European Cut reed back into the reed case, I pushed it in butt first, pressing on the top of the reed. Of course (no duh) I put a small almost imperceptible crease in the tip of the reed. This has impacted the ability of the reed to perform. Of course, if I did this same shtoopid thing with a cane reed, I'd be a bit bummed, but that's it. But this is a fairly new $35 dollar reed.
Does anyone have any experience with trying to recover a Legere reed? Any suggestions other then trashing it, or using it as a $35 marker in my garden?

One or two people have posted in the past that they've successfully adjusted Légères that were too heavy or too light, but I don't remember reading anything about repairing a damaged tip. The only thing I can think might work is to dip it in very warm water (the same way Légère says to soften the reed to make it easier to play), then massage it a little and let it cool. It might fuse the fibers enough to recover the reed's usefulness.
That's complete speculatio0n on my part - I haven't actually heard of anything short of replacing the reed.

Can't be fixed. But you can do a free exchange for any reason if it's fairly new and you still have proof of purchase. They just send a new one and you keep the old one.

The exchange must be done within 30 days of purchase. You have FOUR exchanges available through Legere per calendar year.
I'd say it's done. I do however keep mine "going" by gently bending them back to a straight line from heel to tip. You look across either edge, determine if there is any bend point, then gently bend the downward bend out (I use the table of the mouthpiece to do this). But cracks in the material or bends in the tip are not practical fixes.

I've had a degree of success ( depends on the degree of the tip distortion) by clothes pegging the reed flat on the piece of glass and leaving it in a VERY low oven. The resin seems to have quite a degree of " molecular memory ".

Well actually what I do is preheat the oven on low and then turn it off and put the reed in when the inside of the oven is just tolerable to touch with my hand. So the reed just stays in there with the falling residual heat.
Sorry for not being clear enough before.
Sometimes it works..... sometimes it doesn't. But it's worth a try if the alternative is throwing the reed away.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I really like the Legere European cut, but, man do I HATE those cases. They are hard to get the reed in, and designed to put the back end first, leading to situations like this. I think my lesson learned is that any future Legere reeds I get will be put in my standard 8 slot reed case.

Not the point of the thread.......I know........but I think you just snap the Legere into the coffin, and slide it out.
Not that it makes the process any better mind you.

With those Legere reed cases, I trim the four reed supports with a very sharp knife. On their back side, the side that doesn't touch the reed. That weakens them and they have more flex, but still strong enough to hold the reed securely. Far less danger of damaging a reed when you're inserting them.
