 Dr. Stephen Keith Johnston Passed

Dr. Johnston was the clarinet instructor (among many things) at Shenandoah University for many years. He recently passed away. He was always appreciated and will be deeply missed.

He was like a second-father to me. I did my undergraduate and doctoral work with him.

Dr. Stephen Johnston was my first clarinet teacher.

Since my first lesson at the age of 17, he was with with me as an inspiration, and I will cherish his memory forever. He had a profound impact on my life and the lives of his students and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.

I had the privilege of studying with Dr. Johnston at Shenandoah Conservatory. I still remember my audition vividly—I played a Chopin nocturne (on the clarinet!), and his first comment was, "Wow! You play loud and fast." We would often laugh at the memory of that audition. That simple remark set the tone for our time together, where he was an endlessly supportive teacher, always direct and honest about what needed work yet constantly encouraging me to push my limits.

I kept in touch with Dr. Johnston through all these years and he remained a guiding presence and inspiration. I have always thought of him as the bedrock of my playing. I loved and respected him deeply.

My condolences to his wife, Loretta Johnston, and his entire family.
RIP Dt. Johnston

Tom Piercy

For those of you who may not know who Tom Piercy is (like me!), here is his home web site:

I believe this BB is extremely fortunate to have players like Tom Piercy contribute comments from time to time.

And I agree with Tom...RIP Dr. Johnston. Your efforts with Tom Piercy helped him to become the great clarinet player that he is as noted in his bio.
