 Effects of Covid
Author: Tony F
Date:   2024-08-12 19:36

During the last 3 years I've had 2 visits from the Covid fairy. In neither case were the effects of Covid particularly bad, really not much worse than a bad cold, but since the second infection about 7 months ago I find that my lung capacity is seriously reduced. I find it hard to play more than about 4 bars without breathing, and anything longer and I turn blue. I'm doing deep breathing lung development exercises but progress is very slow. This may be age related (85), but before Covid I had excellent lung capacity. Has anyone else found this?

I have an older acquaintance (older than 65) who had "long hauler's syndrome" that included shortness of breath. A few years after being in pretty rough shape he seems in top form again.......for an old guy.

Hi Tony,

I assume you've seen your doctor, who could listen to your lungs? There may be something underlying the feeling of reduced lung capacity.

I had pneumonia in February/March, then Covid in May. I bought a no. 2 Legere just to get my breathe back. You could try a softer reed and see if that helps.

I did try one of my Vandoren threes yesterday and my goodness I found it difficult. So do build up if you go down to a softer reed.

I got my GP to check me out, no major issues there. /i've reduced my reed strength and gone to a different mouthpiece, which help a bit. I guess time and practice is the answer.

I've not had Covid (knock on wood) and have good lung capacity. I do have anemia, however, so I run out of oxygen first. Playing only for myself. Add a few rests and carry on.
