Barrel Selection for the Clarinetist in 2024
Author: frenchbow44

I am in the market for a new barrel for my A clarinet, looking for a 64mm. I am curious what others think about the wide variety of options in barrels that are available these days. (I have an R13 A)

I've been looking at Brad Behn's new Evo adjustable barrel, (I enjoy his Eb barrel on my Eb) Michael Norsworthy's Reedworthy barrel, Brian Corbin's Hawley R1 barrel, and of course a Buffet Moennig or Chadash barrel as I use a Moennig on my Bb.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for consideration or thoughts on those that I am considering?

TIA!

I would put in a good word for the "adjustable" barrel concept. I happen to have a Polaris version (heavier material.....the black metal ring) that moves from 64mm to 68mm. One point that I never thought of until under "battle conditions" is that if you take off the barrel to swab (to avoid dropping the reed with a loose ligature), you stuff the barrel back on and you're exactly where you were tuning wise. Also I had a moment where a quick tuning change was advantageous and you can't beat the adjustable barrels for that.

I like the specs on the Behn which has a 5mm adjustment range (one starting at 61mm and the other at 63mm). Also the weight of the stainless steel version sounds like it would help focus the sound (as mine which is quite heavy seems to do). Since you already like the Eb version it seems like a no brainer.
