 Buffet returning to roots
Author: Ed

I know that Buffet has sometimes released models that are supposed to be a tribute to earlier models and designs, but it seems here that they have gone back much further to recreate a chalumeau type instrument.

I wonder why the made this in the key of D? I thought C was more common for the little kid instruments.

I haven't woken up fully yet, but if low register G xxx|xxx sounds D, then that's effectively in G if it was a clarinet and had a speaker key (like a G sopranino).

If it's designed for playing in the low register only, then xxx|xxx can be notated as D which would effectively make it a C instrument (like a low D whistle).

I think this is very cool. It looks like a real instrument and will be great for younger kids to start with when their hands are too small for a regular clarinet.

Chris, I don't understand your comments. If the instrument is in key of D, then playing a written "C" on the pocket clarinet would sound as concert pitch D. You could also say that the instrument plays 2 half steps higher than written. So the low register G should sound a concert A. Am I missing something?

I'm confused too now as I just read this on Thomann's site:

"tuning: D; range: F3 - G4"

Watching this video, the lowest note (fingered F by clarinet standards) is a G, which would make it the same pitch as a D clarinet. The range listed on Thomann must be the fingered range.

Do the little ones really need to be playing an instrument made of grenadilla, I ask myself…

I’m sure Buffet have worked out the sustainability angle but I couldn’t help raising an eyebrow!

Having seen this photo it suggested to me to try fitting a clarinet mouth piece to a tenor recorder. It played the C scale, as expected, but the sound was terrible.

I rescued my m'piece.

I saw one over the weekend (but not to play). Nicely made, but the tone hole sizes and spacing seemed too large for children. The dealer said it had only just come in, so he didn't know the price. Just to add to the confusion, he thought it was in C (but was a brass player, so wasn't sure). He didn't seem convinced they would sell well.

I'm 56 and don't deserve to play on a granadilla clarinet!

I know people post here from time to time asking about clarinets for their 5 year-olds. But in over 30 years of public school teaching I never noticed any real demand from parents of kids younger than the age for starting clarinet in school. I don't know of "Suzuki-like" programs anywhere in my area that would provide a market.

I've said it time and time again and will keep on saying it, but Buffet should've just done the right thing and offered a plastic C clarinet based on their E11 C clarinet and be done with it, just as the B12 is a plastic version of the E11.

They can always have reduced keywork versions made like others have been doing as well as a fully keyed 17/6 or 18/6 model. It's not exactly going to be a problem getting them made in China to their specifications.

That way, everyone's happy and C clarinets have far more versatility than a basic D chalumeau that won't have a great deal of use beyond being a starter instrument. At least with a C clarinet, it can be used with all other Concert Pitch instruments used in a music education setting.

I feel like they've just wasted an entire opportunity here with this thing. Then again, it's Buffet.

Can you play chromaticisms in this chalumeau? (no half fingering)

Chris P,

I absolutely agree with you- a plastic C clarinet is a far more useful AND versatile instrument. Not only they could be used in music ed settings, but also attract certain folk band players who only play clarinet occasionally and want something affordable yet in concert pitch, not to mention something you can take outdoors easily(where many of their gigs tend to be). Buffet really could've taken advantage of that but they've blown their chances yet again.
