Uebel emperior bass clarinet in mopane wood
Author: pukalo

I was wondering if anyone here has tried the mopane wood version of Uebel's bass clarinet, and how it compares to the grenadilla version? Specifically regarding sound, response, and intonation. I have been unable to find any videos or audio files of the mopane bass online. I am considering it in the distant future when I can scrape together enough money for a pro-level low C bass.

I'd try to play it against the grenadilla version in a shop.
Given the variability of the instruments and MPs (and reeds), one instrument can play very different from another.

As I understand it, Mopane is as noble a wood as Grenadilla for making woodwind instruments, but has a distinctive tone leaning towards Boxwood. I imagine that it could be lovely in a bass ....hope you get a chance to try it .

I see that the website titled " Buffet Crampon's introduction of Mopane clarinets" contains lots of information , demos, and professional opinions regarding this wood .... I imagine you've probably already seen that however .

I tried it a few weeks ago in Oslo(where an Uebel rep works and stocks several Emperiors at his shop), though only tried the Mopane Emperior against my modified Selmer Privilege(Grenadilla) as there were no Grenadilla Emperiors ready at the time, so I may not be answering pukalo's question here.

That said, the Mopane Emperior had a lighter and reedier tone than my Selmer Privilege, with an even response. However, the rep did tell me that the Emperior projects really well in concert halls & opera houses, and several top pro Scandinavian plays have given their approval of the instrument. I'll have to test both the Mopane & Grenadilla Emperiors alongside my Selmer(perhaps along with a Buffet Prestige) some day to make a firm conclusion.

That's good, I like a reedy sound in the low woodwind. I was split between the buffet tosca and the uebel mopane, and after reading that I am leaning heavily towards the uebel.

Still, I would try to find a dealer who have both Buffet and Uebel.

I have both Uebel instruments (Mopane and Grenadilla) and Buffet in the shop: www.earspasm.com

That, and all of the Royal Global line, Selmer Privilege and Kessler. And soon...one other manufacturer who will remain nameless for the moment.
