choices are very limited on alto clarinet -you can get a whole lot more volume out of a mpc by using bari brand alto sax plastic reeds. i use this combo on a vandoren alto clarinet mpc on a plastic bundy and its pretty loud. much louder than cane reeds. legere american cut reeds also work well for this

I don't want to be loud.
I want to be versatile.
I know one guy, that refaced tenor sax mouthpiece to put it in alto clarinet.
He sounds interesting...

thats not possiable. using the plastic reeds is versatile on alto. i use them in community band every week and no one has complained or even noticed. having a good playing horn also make a huge difference . what brand are you using? vito is the best playing of the plastic entry models . i have a bundy and its fine but also have very good pro horns at my disposal . with a good playing horn and mpc and reeds that work for you-there is no reason you cant play jazz on the alto clarinet.

There aren't many options for something like that as far as I know, however, I have had good experiences with the J&D Hite alto clarinet mouthpiece. Tip opening is 1.397mm/0.055", and the table is designed to comfortably fit alto saxophone reeds in addition to alto clarinet reeds.

Yamaha makes a 7C mouthpiece for alto clarinet that may be of interest. It has a 1.7 mm tip opening and a 22 mm facing length. It's probably the most available and affordable option.

You could always inquire with David Spiegelthal here on this BBoard. He might have an open alto mouthpiece or two on hand for sale, or could rework an existing mouthpiece for you. I play a Selmer C-Star on alto that was reworked by him, and it's delightful.

good luck finding a yamaha 7c alto mpc or even a place that will order it for you. i agree the hite is another good bet for playing jazz as it uses alto sax reeds. much more options to choose from

The great jazz tenorman, Gene Ammons, actually used a Brilhart alto clarinet mouthpiece on tenor for a while.

The traditional classic Selmer C*, the mouthpiece that comes with Selmer Alto clarinet, is 1.7 mm opening. There were more open Selmer Alto mouthpieces, C** (1.75), D/H**(1.8), and E (1.9), but, except for the C*, the classic series is now discontinued.

As Hugues said above, the older Selmer alto mouthpieces have much more open facings than many off-the-shelf mouthpieces today. See if you can hunt one down or two.

Clark Fobes's alto pieces(he makes 2 openings) are also more open than the Vandorens, the Hite and the Yamaha 4C & 5C, so maybe ask him he'd make a Debut alto piece for you to see how you like it- but do make sure you email him first.

But if you can't get hold of one and still adamant that you want something extremely open, perhaps you should consider the idea of having one of your alto clarinet mouthpieces refaced with a jazz alto sax facing. That would basically be creating an alto equivalent of the 7JB. Whether or not you'll like it there's only one way to find out, and it requires a leap of faith.

Fitting a tenor sax piece onto an alto clarinet neck would require extensive modifications of the shank, but I've only heard very few anecdotal experiences on whether or not such a solution works, and I can't remember what they were.

the selmer c* is a great alto mpc but the hite is far better for jazz playing

I would agree with the general opinion that alto clarinet mouthpieces are not..
I have two yamaha7c,a 6c 5c, pomarico 2, 2 vandoren b44, 2 BD5s, two Ed Pillingers and tried and have others and multiple reeds. I found the Pillinger had the best sound response and was the most free blowing. The BD5 choked at volume, I extensively refaced the B44 clos e to the Ed pillinger, from the factory horribly made. Yamaha 7c was my fav on bass for about a decade. On alto alright but no prize. Pomarico not bad, maybe the cute look influenced me😀
Ed Pillinger or other custom option? Cheers
