Are there 1-pc mouthpiece and barrel combinations? I can imagine potential advantages and disadvantages of such a thing.

I’m not sure I get the desire for this configuration. The barrel is technically the top part of the clarinet. Could you provide an example of a perceived benefit?

Hi Paul. The main benefit would be unifying the design of the two components to support a single acoustic profile. In effect it would comprise an extension of mouthpiece design, with the longer sound chamber as available territory. I'd think component designers would find that intriguing; I'm a little surprised that more mpc makers don't do barrels.

Mixing separate commercial components is sort of trial and error most of the time, but with a combined unit they'd presumably match. But an obvious downside would be the inability to do exactly this purportedly avoids - mixing components to find something better.

I think that would be an excellent innovation! I mean, the perfect match between mouthpiece and its extension, the barrel. I tried to get Vandoren interested in the idea years ago, but they looked as me as though I was crazy. Yet I was considerably less crazy then than I am now!

A 2 piece tube has the same acoustic properties as a 1 piece tube of the same total length. Get a metal clarinet if you want fewer pieces.

Hi lydian. I'd agree if a clarinet were a simple tube. The internal dimensions and shape of mouthpieces and barrels change along their lengths. Those changes are designed for specific acoustic purposes. There's little to no guarantee that most (any?) commercially sold mouthpieces and barrels are designed for identical purposes, or even that they're not actually designed with crossed purposes.

No matter what the internal shape. If you start with two identical parts then cut one in half, then join it back together, it will be identical to the first. At least with separate parts, you can mix and match for the perfect combo. With a combined part, you're stuck.

Since I live in the realm of stock barrels and $30 mouthpieces, I'm grateful for being able to buy just a mouthpiece.

I kinda see where you're coming from on the acoustic model. I think that Boosey came closest with the 1010 and the very specifically bored 1010 mouthpiece. That worked for many Brits for awhile but it is problematic........the instrument maker becomes your sole source for a mouthpiece. I'm not sure I like that.
