 Legere with Fobes Debut
Author: EaubeauHorn

I was JUST told that the reason I am flat is BECAUSE I am using a synthetic reed.
Equipment: Ridenour Lyrique, Fobes Debut, Legere reed, short barrel. 10 cents flat across the board.

Is there a way out of this? I'm ready to sell the clarinet because I have plenty of other opportunities to play. I'm not interested in the whole cane reed scenario; I play oboe and have "enough" of that already; one reason I took up clarinet was to not have to mess with cane reeds.

I could not find flatness addressed in a search on synthetic reeds.

Yes, they tend flat. I use shorter barrels about 4mm shorter than normal. If you're already at at a short barrel length there are options. You'd be in for at least a two month deliver for a Chinese barrel off eBay that is quite inexpensive (maybe $40 US dollars) but works, OR you could try the barrels from Jonathan Copeland (they look upside down) which work great and he can customize to ANY size (these are manufactured in conjunction with Wesley Rice). I highly recommend the synthetic ones and I believe they are still around $150.

its still a small price to pay for avoiding the pittfalls of cane. just find a set up that plays in tune and be done. how short is your barrel? you prob need 64mm at least.

oke, I don't wanna hijack this thread but I was wundering.
What is the "normal" (oke I realise there isn't such a thing but, most common) barrel length for Bb clarinet with a forbes Debut or any"standard" student mouthpiece?

I am asking beause I am thinking about the legere reeds, depeding on my experience with the Pilgerstorfer Dolce.

and have two barrels with my clarinet the 62 and 65 mm hard rubber barrel.

Kind regards

Matthieu

I'm using the shorter barrel that came with the clarinet.
Do OTHER brands of synthetic have this same flatness problem? I'm a whole lot more likely to get a different reed than a different barrel, which could end up still being too long.

So far no other brand of synthetic reed has proven to work. The Vandoren shows some promise, but until it has some actual real world success I will stick with Legere Euro cut for Boehm. Legere German cut reeds also work quite well on German mouthpieces such as those from Gleichweit.

@EaubeauHorn

Have you asked Tom himself, this seems to me a fairly common setup and Tom's proud on his tuning from what I heard from him. Seems he would be able and willing to give you personal advice.

Just my 5 cents..

Kind greats

Matthieu

In my experience, the new Vandoren synthetic reed plays significantly less flat than Legere — worth a try!

@maxopf,

That sounds to fit to there theory to not try to imitate the reed internal structure but create an pure accoustic imitation. At least I think I read such a thing.

Anyway, am curious

Greats Matthieu.
