used A clarinet

This topic comes up from time to time, for a high school student, or a retired friend on fixed income.

Does anybody know of a source of moderate-to-low priced used A clarinets?

Terms describing cost are so loaded...
It really depends a lot on what "moderate-to-low priced" means to the instrument shopper.

Clarinets Direct and Reed and Squeak are both reputable dealers of used instruments based in the UK, both run by professional clarinettists and usually with a decent selection of instruments at different price points.

We are looking at $1000US or less. This will rule out modern pro-line horns.

I have Noblet A and Eb clarinets as backups and they were that price range. My Noblet bass clarinet was $1200.

I had to use the A Noblet on "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" and nobody was the wiser. Loaned out the Eb Noblet to a college student for Schostakovich Symphony No. 5 and he sounded great on it.

Ralph,

I found a used buffet E11 A for my purposes. It is a good sounding instrument. There is a UK seller (not me) on ebay selling a Bb/A pair of e11's right now. If you bought the set and sold the Bb, you would end up under 1K for the total price. With a new barrel the e11 is a great instrument.

I agree with the above post-a barrel from R13 Prestige most likely will improve the sound of E11 (may improve tuning too).

"Reed and Squeak" and ClarinetsDirect (both in the UK) now list intermediate A clarinets within the stated price range.

I know a pro symphony player who uses a Noblet Eb that the orchestra owns, originally they played a Selmer Eb but eventually sold that as they found they just played the Noblet all the time. Under-rated horns, but I've never tried a Noblet A clarinet.
