Hi, I was looking online and I noticed a couple models of clarinet, namely the Selmer Privilege and the Buffet Tradition have two distinct "generations" that are visually different. I was wondering why these two models went through these iterations and what specifically about them changed? All I know is that the Tradition got a low F tuning mechanism. Also wondering if there are any noteworthy changes to other models out there (R13 and RC for example) and the reasons for those changes. Image examples included.

The Privilege added the “new” Superman “S” logo. I think Selmer was just doing an update much like any software company. Oddly though for me, the resistance and way you use your air changed in the new version. Before it played much like an R13 only more robust and better in tune. The “newer” version seems to choke off in the throat register when playing softly. A friend of mine who loves everything Selmer has no issue with the new version.
As for Buffet, I think any updates and new models are just meant to stimulate buzz and ultimately sales.

A very reputable and knowledgeable musician told me that Selmer Privilege gen. 2 has different bore from gen. 1.
Re: Buffet RC.
1. RC Prestige in A got a bushing on the outside portion of the register tube and the C#/G# tone hole got a small chimney.
Not sure of the effect of the bushing on the register tube but the chimney makes C# sounding more "in line" with the surrounding notes, whereas model without the chimney have C# somewhat dull sounding. BTW, the Privilege has a similar C#/G# tone hole chimney
2. Regular RC in A (not Prestige) no longer has the egg-shaped bell. The bell of the RC looks just like any other bell. The RC Prestige (both Bb and A) still has the bell of that shape.

The previous and current versions of the Privilege definitely felt different in non-cosmetic ways when compared side by side.
I had none of the problems with the newer Privilege that Paul mentioned, it's my favourite Selmer clarinet, with the older Privilege being a close second.
Other Selmer clarinets are still excellent and not really worse in any objective way, there are just a few things I prefer personally on the Privilege.
