Is My Eb Set Up Good?
Author: Jacob R

I am using a Buffet Crampon R13(or something 13) with a Vandoren B44 mouth piece. The reeds I am using are Eb Clarinet 3.0 v12(I heard that Bb clarinet reeds sound better on an Eb,is this true?)

Seems ok to me. Nothing in your setup is unusual or extreme. It is important to have a very well set up instrument. If there are any pad sealing issues, they will cause you a lot of grief.

I prefer Eb reeds over Bb, but many do not. You have to try it and see. Bb reeds need to be cut to make them short enough to lay flat on the mouthpiece without hitting the barrel.

You could look into after-market Eb barrels that have a cut-out in them which allows you to use a full size Bb reed without having to cut it. Backun and Ryan Pereira make barrels with the cut-out amongst many others out there.

I prefer cut down b flat reeds to e flat reeds. But you can also use soprano sax reeds, and these are short enough not to need cutting. They are wider still than b flat reeds, but that doesn’t seem to matter. Obviously, this is all very facing-sensitive, so you’d need to be open to some experimentation.

I have a Pereira barrel and can't say enough good things about it. It replaced a Scott barrel I had for years.

I have used cut down Bb reeds o the Eefer for more than 30 years. Seems to give a "beefier" sound and of course you have more options for models/ brands with Bb reeds. I'm using Steuer Exclusive 3.5 now and they sound great. I use a pair of gardening clippers to cut the butt end. If you wet the butt end it will cut a little easier and less chance of cracking.

Weirdly, a Bb reed that has become spent will often have a second life as an Eefer reed after a little chopping.

One thing that has really helped me is the Clark Fobes Eb extension. It makes the 12ths in better tune and seems to round out the intonation issues on any Eb. I've used it on R13, Prestige and Tosca horns.

Silverstein ligatures seem to give a bigger sound although I like the VanDoren Optimum quite well too.

My own speculation is the difference in sound between Bb and Eb reeds comes from the different reed tip profile, not the width. The Eb reeds have more curvature to them so the reed does not overlap the mouthpiece tip sides. The Bb reeds have a wider shallower curve to them and cover the mouthpiece tip more uniformly. This is especially the case with the Bb white master's especially, since they are the same width as standard Eb reeds. But not all mouthpieces are cut to the same tip curve so on some the Eb profile will match better and others work with the Bb profile.
