a boxwood Buffet from 1825-1840

For the curious about clarinet history, this is an example of an early 19th c "Buffet à Paris) in boxwoood (date supplied by Buffet Crampon that examined the instrument). It was found in an old wardrobe in its original case.

My wife collects and performs on historic clarinets (both original instruments and copies). Some years back she performed Symphonie Fantastique on clarinets similar to the one above, and when doing her demonstration lectures used to play solos on both the Bb and Eb. The sound is very beautiful, and with a bit of work and a good ear you CAN play them in tune (not much harder than learning to play trombone in tune). The Eb solo in particular sounded great- I recall thinking that if I'd sounded that good in some of my auditions I might be in a better orchestra...
