My dear friend, the English clarinetist, saxophonist, composer Tony Coe has died. He played jazz clarinet and also Classical, having played with Boulez, Alan Hacker and other greats. He is also on the soundtrack of many, many films: Yentel and other Michel Legrand, Wladimir Cosma and Henry Mancini film scores. He had a life-long love for the music of Duke Ellington and was offered a job by both the Duke and Basie; jobs which he turned down because he didn't want to be permanently on the road. He was equally at home playing Poulenc, Brahms, Boulez, Indojazz fusions, bebop, Ellington..everything you can name. Rest in peace, Tony. I, as well as many other musicians, friends and admirers, will miss you so much.

Very sad to hear this.
I had many great evenings listening to Tony in Pizza Express Soho, the Bulls Head in Barnes, and the Leather Bottle in South Wimbledon.
A truly great musician.

I'd like to add my name to the list of those who are so sad to hear of Mr. Coe's passing. I am in awe of the talent which he possessed and shared so willingly with us all. One of my most recent CD purchases was his Dancing in the Dark which he did with the wonderful pianist John Horler. The musicianship exhibited on that disc is nothing short of astounding. The music world has lost one of the truly great talents. RIP Tony.

Jim: Thank you for your kind comments. 'Dancing in the Dark' was, I believe, his last recording and picked up his morale, for he was happy with the result of that recording. A word to all of you: COVID is still around and still has its victims. Let's not put our guard down.

Reformed: Thank you for remembering Tony and I'm glad you have fond memories of his performances. I might add that he was very amusing and eccentric with all sorts of funny anecdotes to tell about Ben Webster and the many greats he played with and knew. The Classical French radio station France-Musique paid tribute to him this evening. I hope the BBC did as much.

Ruben: I never heard Tony Coe live, but have enjoyed listening to his recordings since you made me aware of him. I'm sorry for your loss, and for the loss to the music world. May he rest in peace.
