I need a short piece from the classical era for a student's recital. ¿Any suggestions?

Hi Elmo:

Help us to help you. Communicate the student's degree of proficiency, ideally using what standard etude books the student is currently working on, so pieces can be recommended that best match their abilities. :)

The flight of the bumblebee is short, if the student can manage it.

Weber Concertino is relatively short but very complete in form. Or there is the very lovely, slow Wagner (Baermann) Adagio.

Does it have to be for clarinet specifically, or can it be a transcription?

Unaccompanied, with piano, or part of chamber ensemble?

The request was for something from the classical era, which would preclude any of the suggestions so far. Lacking the relevant information about the student's ability, I'll take a guess and recommend a movement form a Xavier Lefevre sonata. They are relatively short and of intermediate difficulty.

Student is in his early 20's and is giving his graduation recital. He'll be playing the Brahms Trio and the Nielsen. The school requires a classical, a romantic, and a 20th century piece on the recital. So we need a short classical era piece just to fulfill the requirement.

These follow a certain thread that may or may not meet your needs, but they are all short:

Eugene Bozza: Aria
Claude Debussy: La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin (arr: David Hite)
Claude Debussy: Petite Piece
Marc Delmas: Promenade
Edward Elgar: Salut D'Amour (arr: self)
Gabriel Faure: Sicilienne (arr: self)
Jules Massenet: Meditation from "Thais" (arr: Merle J Isaac)
Macel Poot: Arabesque

Cheers

I find most of the Lefevre sonatas to be fairly uninteresting to a general audience. However there are movements/bits and bobs that stand out as of higher quality.
I'd recommend the slow movement from the 10th Sonata from his method. I'll try to attach a pdf (not sure if that will work).
This is written with an untransposed bass line- but a competent keyboard player can easily turn this into a simple chordal accompaniment. A piano realisation of this work has either just been published, or is about to be... I think Nicholas Cox is editing (I know the 1st volume has been done, and this was to be in the 2nd volume)
Edit- 10th Sonata is in volume 3 of the Lefevre sonatas published by "HH" and edited by Nicholas Cox.

My attempt to attach a pdf appears not to be working... but then Adobe also appears not to be working tonight so not sure what's going on

Could it be the pound character in the name of the file that the bboard doesn't like?

The file is there but the address is wrong (the # needs to encoded). This should work:

Thanks for sorting that paulyb.
Funny looking at that pdf- I didn't realise when I was attaching it, but it includes the bass line transposed so it can be played clarinet/cello (or bassoon). That's my music handwriting from 1992!!!!!!!

What about the "Konzertsatz" (one movement, duration about 10 minutes) by Franz Xaver Süssmayr (1766-1803), who completed the Mozart Requiem? There are two fragments of the first movement of this concerto preserved. You'll find Craig Hill's completion of this fragments for clarinet in A at imslp with interesting annotations to it's history. Süssmayr composed the concerto for the basset clarinet of Anton Stadler. There is another completion by Michael Freyhan, published by Doblinger with piano accompaniment.

It is pretty nice music, not easy, but not so difficult as Nielsen.

Hier a computer generated recording of Craig Hill's version at youtube:
