A friend from high school, many decades ago, just reached out to me that he wanted to try playing clarinet again, and asked about what to buy.
He lives in LA. Where are the best technicians for basic repairs in the LA area? His budget for an instrument is around $1000. He is not interested in $1000 overhauls.
Thanks

Ralph,
This is actually a tough question. I’ve been in the LA area since I started playing again in 2010 and have tried several places. The famous RDG Woodwinds, now in Pasadena, is not suitable for this budget. My best recommendation is Long Beach Woodwinds. My son bought an older tenor sax there last year, and it has worked out well. The technician we talked to seemed able and tweaked the instrument to my boy’s liking before we made the purchase. They had a variety of used, quality-brand clarinets in stock when we were there. I didn’t try any though as I’d be risking my life if I brought another clarinet into the house 😊
