Do High Pitch (452Hz) Boehm System Clarinets Exist?
Author: Chris P
Date:   2023-03-05 04:41

All the HP clarinets I've seen tend to be simple/Albert systems made by Boosey&Co. or Hawkes&Sons that are usually found languishing in attics or antique shops (as well as eBay), but did they or any other makers also offer HP Boehm system clarinets?

The opinions I express are my own.

I had a student many many many years ago with a Besson Bb clarinet at HP, this played pretty much like a "B natural" clarinet, and was standard Boehm system.

I think my E.J. Albert is a full Boehm and high pitched. I'm not sure but here are photos, and maybe you would know?

It is 22.5" from the top of the barrel to the bottom of the bell. I don't have the original mp.

It has the same keys as my modern Yamaha.

Didn't Jack Brymer convert a HP "A" clarinet into a LP Bb by sawing a bit off the top joint, before he bought his first pair of 1010s? (it's many years since I read "From where I sit", so I may have that wrong....)

I've seen a Boehm system Buffet that played beautifully but seemed to be almost in the key of B natural, so I presume it was in fact an old high pitch instrument.

Incidentally, I wonder whether any historically informed performers have attempted to put together an orchestra at A=452 - there must be a lot of lovely old high pitch instruments that are completely unusable for anything else.

I tried to play my E.J. Albert in a community orchestra, with a different barrel that brought it to the right pitch.

Unfortunately the individual notes on the instrument were wildly out of tune with each other and I got a lot of funny looks. The conductor, who had perfect pitch, used to look as though some of my notes were causing him physical pain.

After every single person in the living world had told me a needed a new clarinet, I cracked and bought one.

I think mine is the same as this one below (but much more dog-eared):

http://www.clarinetsdirect.biz/EJAlberts-Fletcher.html

It has a really bewitching tone.

Having said all this, my clarinet teacher did once have a go at playing it and it sounded much better with him, because he could get the notes to sound reliably. He is an opera singer, by profession, and has lungs of steel. I think in the right hands, the instrument might be able to do what is needed, but it's a very different beast from my new Yamaha.

I think maybe an orchestra of these older instrument would have a really beautiful tone, but need real seasoned professionals and a lot of patience to make it work.

There's almost always one on "that auction site" at any given time. Most that show up seem to be Buffets. You do have to be careful as many of the older ones are tuned much sharper than 452Hz. Some even claim that they are B natural clarinets though there is absolutely zero evidence of a modern B natural clarinet having existed.

Hello,
I own two barrelless Noblet aine Böhm clarinets. One is low pitch, one is high pitch.
I remember, that a lot of the old wraparound register key clarinets from Buffet was pitched in hp.
regards
Claus
