Help identifying mouthpiece (with attachment this time)
Author: Musikat

Does anyone know what this mouthpiece is or what it is worth? The only identification is a printed M45 on the side. It looks to be in very good condition.

I'm interested in selling but don't know what it is worth to price it.

Thanks!

Still not seeing an attachment. But an M45 could be a Meyer.

Thanks. If it's a Meyer or doesn't have the iusual stamp on the front. There are no markings other than a small stamped M45 on the side. I can't get attachments to work for some reason but I did find this Teddit post with the exact same marking but no concrete answer: https://www.reddit.com/r/Clarinet/comments/102khxq/im_looking_for_any_info_about_this_mp_anyone_hard/

Make sure the photo is under 2MB.

Is this your post as well?

This appears to be a Babbitt blank based on the general design. The "M" stands for medium facing length and the "45" is the tip opening in thousandths of an inch. The new Meyers are also made by Babbitt which explains why they use the same system.

Is it worth anything? A little, some refacer may want it. But the thing is Babbitt has made a TON of mouthpieces and blanks so they are fairly common. It may be worth $30 to the right person but it's a tough sell as Babbitt blanks are not very highly regarded. For example Clark Fobes uses Babbitt blanks for his beginner and intermediate line of mouthpieces (Debut and Nova) but the higher end models are made by Wesley Rice (and previously Zinner). Even with the Meyer mouthpieces most people tend to seek out the older mouthpieces in favor of the newer ones. I have a 6M tenor sax mouthpiece from the 60s that is absolutely fabulous, the new ones just aren't the same.

I have the same mouthpiece, purchased new from Marshall Music in Michigan for about $40 around 2010. It was represented as a copy of the Vandoren B45. It is ebonite, has thick tip and side rails, and tunes well with older, large-bore instruments such as the Bundy 1400.

As far as value goes, I'd price one at around $25. But if you have old clarinets on hand with divergent twelfths and/or sharp throat tones, this mouthpiece could provide some correction to those faults. That's why I keep mine in my studio.

Here's mine atop the box it was sold in.

Thank you! Looks like it might not be worth selling at this time.

Also worth noting:. This mouthpiece is capable of generating seriously loud dynamics, and demands the use of softish reeds. If you have a stockpile of too-soft reeds, you could put them to good use with the M45, especially when playing outdoors. The audience WILL hear you.
