 "A" clarinet suggestions?
Author: crusius

Hi all!

In a sudden need for an A clarinet (need one in ten days), probably going to pull the trigger today or tomorrow, budget is sub-$4k after taxes (US/California). Currently between a used SEVR-A for $3.2k and a used YCL-72A CS for $1.8k. Both places accept returns. Trying to keep it to Yamahas for a better ergonomic match to my CSG Bb.

Anybody with a strong opinion for one or another? Otherwise I'll probably go "cheaper first."

If I had more time or knew anybody in London I'd have a CSG play-tested from Howarth or Dawkes there and have it shipped here. Sub-$4k, but timing is a bit tight. Will probably do something like that later.

Thanks!

What’s your Bb? Some advantages in having an A that matches, although plenty of people survive with non-matching pairs!

The Bb is a CSG, but I won't have time to get an in-budget "A" version in time...

Rent one for a while. It's no use trying to purchase a clarinet under such pressure.

Thanks Liquorice - I thought about that but it would be hard for me to come ahead money-wise if I rent. An E11 goes for (about) $65/month, the SEVR for (about) $130 month, and that YCL-72A could probably be resold for $1600 in two months.

I'll probably go the YCL-72A route. There's another one in contention but it's all sub-$2k at this point.

I would just rent that E11 and take a month or two to find the right clarinet. Obviously you'll spend a few bucks more, but you'll spend even more getting the wrong clarinet, selling it, and getting another.

Even if you end up with one of the ones you are considering, $65 seems worth it to buy a bit of time and the peace of mind of knowing that you didn't have to rush the decision.

The 72 is probably a pretty good clarinet and will have similar keys to the CSG but I doubt it will "feel" very similar playing wise. If you DO get it and then decide to sell later on, advertise it HERE first as I often have students looking for an A clarinet (and I've found in the past- Buffet Bb and Yamaha A go together reasonably well).
On the other hand, Max S-D does give some good advice above...

Thanks everybody for the good and helpful suggestions. I'd be fine with a rent-to-buy type of thing, but that's not available in my area. (I did rent a few instruments before switching to clarinet.)

My preference nowadays is to spend the little time I have doing a proper multi-month fair trial of the clarinet, adjusting mouthpieces and reeds to it, and I'm fine selling it at a small loss if it really does not work out for me in the end.

For the record, I was about to pull the trigger on that YCL-72 today, but ended up taking a deep breath and ordering a CSG III from London after talking to some people over there. Here's hoping the Yamaha "consistency" pays off.

Thanks all!

Oh I think you'll be fine with that CSG, a pity as I liked the idea of that 72 being available 6months from now ;-)
I've played CSGs in a shop here in nz that doesn't do ANY setup etc, and they were all more or less the same, all quite playable (and I'm picky)
