Is The Klosé Book For Beginners?
Author: Johnny Galaga

The Celebrated Method For Clarinet (Which I believe is often just called the Klosé Book?) starts off talking to you like you've never played a clarinet before. It talks about how to read music and rhythms. There's a fingering chart. Then it goes in to some very basic long tones. When in fact many of the later pages are swamped in terrifying mountains of 32nd notes.

So exactly who is this meant for? Why would a book that insanely advanced start off like you're in 6th grade in the wheel?

Because it was written for adult beginners in the middle of the 19th century (who didn't have the distraction of computers/media/gameboy etc)

I've mentioned the book I started with in 4th grade-- Foundation to Clarinet Playing by Carle Reinecke. It too started off at square one. It didn't go as far as the Klose, but it was a thick book and the stuff at the end was probably for a decent playing high school student. I enjoyed it and still have it (well, most of it). It wasn't composed as far back as the Klose of course (can't find the date).

Yeah, if you can't get through it you're a wuss and need to switch to an easy instrument like recorder.

But seriously, there's no reason to torture yourself. There are tons of beginner books that are far, far better and more appropriate for the modern reader/player. I've learned many instruments at different stages in my life, and the beginning band methods written for school children never fail. Makes learning the rudiments almost effortless. After you get the basics ingrained in your fingers and brain, then knock yourself out with all the great method books of the past. They're great for sightreading and technique building. They're great for honing your skills, but not for starting from scratch on your own. If you do chose to use something like Klose from the beginning, you really need a teacher's guidance to get through it.

Another thing to remember about Klose vrs modern (child orientated books), the adults using Klose had probably already learnt another instrument. At the time sources advised against the clarinet as a "starter instrument".

Fairly often I still turn to one of the old methods - Klose, Langenus, Lazarus - and treat myself to some of their operatic and technical material.

I just found it odd why an author writing this book would put introductory paragraphs that talk to you like a newcomer would then go on to write very advanced, difficult etudes in the same book. It doesn't make logical sense.

The old complete methods by Klose, Lazarus and I assume others, were meant to be comprehensive. What's the problem?

Firstly the Klose book is written under the assumption that once you learn a note, you have learnt that note and can now play/recognise it.
Second, the Klose book is written under the assumption that an adult fingers will be able to quickly master the fingerings (covering holes etc) and not need numerous simple pieces for each new note to develop reliability in your fingering.
My experience with teaching numerous children over the years suggests to me that this is an unrealistic approach with the majority of young students (THOUGH I have had students who went through a "one year" program in a few months).
And having taught a few beginner adults, I'd have to say that at least half of them would find the Klose method advances too quickly.
However, no one uses the Klose books as a sole tutor book anymore (or at least, no one I've heard of). What we do use the Klose books for are the excellent exercises, studies and Duos. The legato exercises near the start are really useful (both for teaching and for my own use) and I often use the articulation exercises for bass clarinet students.
There's nothing illogical about it though, Klose just assumed you weren't stupid and would put some effort and time into it, AND that you already were musically literate.

That's what I do with the Klose book--just playing through the studies now and again. "Klose just assumed you weren't stupid....." I love it.
