Why not just use a string ligature until you've had some time to get used to the instrument? It achieves the same goal but you don't have to worry about getting the right size before you have the instrument in hand. 1.5mm waxed cotton cord is perfect for this, I was able to get a lifetime supply of ligatures for $10...
Chris is right in that it depends on the type of instrument. For a Selmer the alto sax size might work (though not ideally) but for the Buffet or Leblanc it won't fit as they use alto clarinet mouthpieces.
