What size Silverstein ligature for Basset Horn?
Author: Jaysv

I am playing some basset horn next month and need to get a ligature. I am looking at getting a Silverstein ligature but was not sure what size to get. Does anyone here have experience with these ligatures and know what size might work? I am playing on a Vandoren BD5 mouthpiece.

Was thinking the alto sax size might be fine since you can adjust them but figured I would check here first.

Thanks!

For alto clarinet mouthpieces some tenor sax ligatures fit. The alto sax ligatures are too small.

That depends on what basset horn you're playing and whether it uses a Bb or an alto mouthpiece.

Selmer basset horns use a Bb mouthpiece whereas Buffet and Leblanc use alto clarinet mouthpieces.

If it's another make (eg. F.A.Uebel or something else), then you'd have to check the mouthpiece size against either a Bb or an alto one and use the appropriate size ligature.

Why not just use a string ligature until you've had some time to get used to the instrument? It achieves the same goal but you don't have to worry about getting the right size before you have the instrument in hand. 1.5mm waxed cotton cord is perfect for this, I was able to get a lifetime supply of ligatures for $10...

Chris is right in that it depends on the type of instrument. For a Selmer the alto sax size might work (though not ideally) but for the Buffet or Leblanc it won't fit as they use alto clarinet mouthpieces.

Just for general info. The Silverstein is NOT a string ligature and DOES NOT behave like one. It would be much more accurate to say it is the ultimate metal ligature……as far as sound and immediacy of response. I have four of them.

I have a Selmer basset horn and use a Bb mouthpiece. The Silverstein ligature that I use on my Bb works fine.

I use a tenor sax size one for my Leblanc.
