Any suggestions on how a soprano clarinet player might try bass clarinets for possible purchase? I play soprano clarinets regularly, but my experience playing bass clarinet is limited and not recent. I expect I won’t play as proficiently at first as I hope I can after gaining some experience.

Borrow one from a friend, rent one or pick up something really inexpensive at first. They are a completely different animal and it would be helpful to have a mouthpiece that works for you before investing over ten grand.

Good advice, Paul Aviles.
I've borrowed bass clarinets a few times and decided to get my own mouthpiece. I will at least initially be playing on a Fobes Nova.
Yes, the price tags are intimidating. I'm hoping to buy a used instrument for at least a little less.

Unless money is no object, your budget will probably dictate your options. Each price range really only has a few options and the tiers are relatively differentiated, IMO. There just isn't the gradation of prices that you see in the Bb clarinet market.
Figure out your budget and then you can explore your one or two options.

Join a community college ensemble. I plan to rejoin one again in the spring. When I last played with them, they had a Selmer Paris model 30 (low Eb) model that I really enjoyed playing. I know they later got a pair of Buffet Crampon Tosca Low C bass clarinets.
So depending on the group, you might find some quality clarinets to play for a semester.
Getting back into playing after 20 years.
