That's bizarre. :-) I feel bad for young clarinet players coming through and having to wade through the thicket of confusing information out there.

Young clarinet players - by which I mean school-age students - often have teachers who can make recommendations that cut through the thicket. The recommendation may be based only on the teacher's experience-based personal preference, but it gets the young student going without the confusion. When the developing student knows enough to start making his or her own choices, he/she has joined the rest of us.
