(alto sax i presume) i use an old vandoren mouthpiece that i refaced, with a Vandoren Optimum Clarinet ligature- this lig works great for me on Alto sax, which is good as i don't like it that much on Clarinet (it's ok, but at the end of the day i prefer my Bonade)

yes the m/o is fine also and so is the old masters vandoren if you can find one. a tenor sax size usually fits alto clarinet.

This seems to be the place for info on alto clarinet ligatures.
I don't find a lot of plastic or rubber ligatures like the Luybens out there for alto clarinet. So I'm going to throw this out just for general information because it seems to have potential. I've been trying out different mouthpiece/ligature combinations on my Leblanc alto after Dave Spiegelthal did some excellent work on the venting. In just throwing things at it I grabbed the deQuelery Products PR Bb clarinet ligature I've had around. (That ligature presented some problems for me on the Bb soprano discussed in another thread here.) I ran the adjustment screw all the way out to the end and press-fit it to my Vandoren BD5 alto mpc and Legere American Cut alto sax reed. Not only did it press-fit nicely and firmly on Vandoren BD5, B44 and B40 alto mouthpieces, it plays great! Very clear, pure and strong sound and great articulation. Nicer than any other ligature in my collection (mostly Rovners and metals). (As I'm not playing cane on my alto, I can't speak to how it would work with cane.)
It fits even better on the Fobes San Francisco and Grabner Zinner alto cl mpcs than on the Vandorens. Both seem to be a bit smaller around, so the screw has more adjustment leeway.
It still presents the problem that the sides of the reed set on two points, but it is not nearly as much of a problem getting the wider Legere alto sax reeds firmly seated as it was for Bb soprano reeds on Bb mpcs. It actually seems to be less difficult to get the reed centered than on my Francois Louis Pure Brass alto ligature (my other favorite). And it could benefit with a little longer adjusting screw to give a little more leeway to the fit (which gives me a reason to bother making that modification).
Just another option out there for Legere players.

I've been using the Silverstein alto sax ligature and it is wonderful with either Grabner or Lomax alto clarinet mouthpieces. Makes the alto very free blowing and resonant.

Eefer guy:
You don't say which model and size of Silverstein alto sax ligature you use on those mouthpieces? I know some Bb clarinet players who swear by them, but from the web site the number of choices seems to be huge and most are very expensive. These are obviously not something that we amateurs just try out on a lark. More like something one buys when one is committed to a mouthpiece and then to one ligature and then learns to live with the combo over a period of time. Not for us who are still mouthpiece tourists on alto.
How does it play with synthetic reeds vs. cane?

i have been unable to find any plastic lig that fits a alto clarinet and intrested to test paul,s theory as i only play legere. too bad the gigliotti plastic ligs are no longer made. i bet it would have worked fine. most alto clarinet mpcs will take a tenor sax lig so there is still hope of finding something.

Following super20dan's endorsement on another ligature thread, I bought a Pereira 3D alto clarinet ligature and will have to say that it works extremely well - the best ligature I've tried so far for Legere reeds on an alto. Totally cleared up some problems in articulation and crossing the break I was having with other ligatures. Think this may be the one I stay with unless something better comes along, which I have difficulty imagining.
I've continued experimenting with the deQuelery PR-series ligatures. I recently received their tenor sax ligature that I ordered on the the theory that many tenor ligatures work on alto clarinet mouthpieces. Oddly, their web page does not show a sax version of this particular design, but it's available on Etsy for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxes. (They don't appear to make alto or bass clarinet models.) I see that it fits much better on a tenor sax mouthpiece than their Bb clarinet model fits on a Bb clarinet mpc, but still doesn't exactly fit the alto clarinet mpcs I'm using. The reed falls out of position too easily on alto clarinet mpcs. They have improved the quality of metal in the screw so that it is harder and not so prone to stripping as the earlier one I got. (The screw from a Rovner Dark alto sax ligature also works and is at least as strong as the newer screws in the deQuelerys.) I may try the alto sax model when I feel like dropping another $55, but the Pereira 3D is so good I may just abandoned this experiment.

I bought the Silverstein from our local music store and I didn't keep the packaging but it is the one with gold rails. I was able to bring my alto the store to try it out. It sounded great and I wet away a happy customer.
If your local music store carries the Silversteins you might try the same "try before buying" process.
