Someone gave me some bottles of "Instrument Oil"-- you know, the little ones same size as Key & Bore oil that you buy. Of course I won't use these as bore oil, but wonder if it can be used as key oil on the joints? Bottle just says Instrument Oil, not valve or slide oil. What think you?

If it doesn't say what the ingredients are, I'd be inclined not to use it at all.

It smells like key or bore oil. I got it from a band teacher and it came from a music store. I just emailed the store and asked them about it. The brand is Encore.

donald, Why? Did you buy it? It's available in NZ at Mighty Ape for $20NZ among other places. The original name was Clarinet Secrets until I found out there was not one but 2 books by that name. I have many contemporary etude books and have found none harder than mine. It's the only title that came to mind and was published 4 years ago so there will be no name change.....

I think instrument manufacturers just sell thin valve oil and rename it "key oil", "bore oil", etc. You can use it on sticky doors or locks:)
"Key oil" is too thin to use on keys. The worst it will do is run out, evaporate, or get in the wood. It probably seems to work because if you have some old gummy stuff in there it will dissolve it and free it up.
If it's petroleum it has some kind of thinner in it like kerosene that evaporates. Synthetic is better, but I understand you have to be careful about mixing different kinds because some combinations gum up.
I use synthetic motor oil for keys - 5W-20. It's thicker and doesn't evaporate. I got transmission oil for Saxophones, but I wouldn't recommend exactly what I got because of the smell.
Some people use mineral oil on the bore, but IMHO think plant or nut oil is better.

Sorry if it seemed mean spirited, but why on earth WOULD you call a book that, and you're asking for it having it at the the bottom of every post. I feel ashamed for mentioning it - I think of the good spirit people like GBK and Hank Lehrer have shown on this board, but you honestly demonstrate frequently that you can't back your claim up at all. I'm by no means the only person who thinks that, just the grouchiest person who thinks that.

It's a matter of risk.
It's almost certainly a regular petroleum key oil... but you probably can't know for sure... unless you can find out.
The worst is using vegetable oil for keys, you might be able to tell if that's what it is, but better not to risk it if you're not sure. It can cause keys to get stuck, etc.
For the bore, there is an approach that prefers petroleum oils, and some prefer vegetable oils (usually specific types).
Other than that, most key oils sold by regular stores are very thin, more similar to valve oil. It's better than nothing, but I prefer a "medium" oil for hinge tubes and "thick" oil or even grease for hinge rods.

donald-- I have it at the bottom of my posts because I'm allowed to do that. It makes sense to advertise anywhere it's free. I put an ad in monthly on 3 FB groups and have sold several that way (as well as one sale I know of from here). If the mods ask me to remove it as my "signature" (think I followed the rules) I will do so immediately. Have you bought the book? I would honestly like your opinion. If you haven't bought it, I can't figure how you say I can't "back up my claim". It's just a title. Of the 8 reviews on Amazon.com only one was negative. It is reviewed in this month's (June 2022) issue of The Clarinet Journal and is worth the read. I'm sorry you find the title offensive. Perhaps chalk it up as a marketing tool. It's still curious why you brought it up on my thread about instrument oil. To get a reaction I suppose. Accomplished, so let's just let it go at that.
