I work in instrument repair full time, and on the side buy and restore clarinets. I recently acquired an interesting R13 on one of the auction sites. No background history available and was purchased from a non-musician.

When it arrived I noticed a few details custom details uncommon to any standard R13, and wanted to present it to the community. I'm curious if these are indicative of a particular shop/technician, or if these are the experiments of an unknown hack.

"Mods" Include:
Clipped bridge key wing, but only half
Inward taper on thumb tube touch point
Nearly flush octave pip (debating whether intentional)
Some flattened ring keys (not all, and only toward heel)
Flattened chimney on UJ C# tone hole

SN: 87,6xx, non-original silver-plated keys (posts, rings and trill guide all faded nickel plate), pads are a mix of skin and 5 cork pads on the UJ (Reg, F#, Eb sliver, C#, Trill 1), no signs of interior meddling with the wood. Seems well played but well cared for.

I'll edit the post or respond if I find more features. Thanks!

Maybe the player had special needs.

The thumb tube is possibly related to excessive wear. I’ve seen them where the inside edge becomes extremely pitted. Some techs will chamfer the inner edge to get a little more life out of the tube. This appears to be a more excessive version of that. Ideally the tube should be replaced though.

The modification to the bridge key is to facilitate lining up the upper and lower stack. The thumb tube is from wear. The hole for the register tube is a little oversized now. You can shim it with shellac and/ or some other material. Register tubes on newer Buffet clarinets have a lip so that the tube stays in an ideal location.

Hans Moennig used to cut off the outside "ear" from the bridge key just like in your picture. The thumb tube dishing looks like it is from use.

The Moennig Buffets I saw when he was still working in Philadelphia and they were ubiquitous in the area (including a Bb I still own and an A I regrettably sold) had both ears cut off. I think he did it to make it easier to line the two bridge keys up.

I've got modifications like that on my clarinet and it's just because my hands are a bit small. My local shop makes the modifications to my own design.
