 Clarinet Prices Skyrocketing?

I haven't looked at prices in a few years, but ohhh holy cow. What the heck has happened? I'm seeing Yamaha 255s, 450s, 650s for like double what they used to cost.

I don't know what they used to cost, but they do seem very expensive, and the maintenance is very expensive too. I had no idea when I started. Compared to my £53 violin with practically no maintenance costs, this is definitely an expensive hobby.

Um...........

Everything is going up. Do you buy gas? It's probably going to $6.00 a gallon in the US.

Look at Wood Wind Brasswind prices. What they say IS the price of clarinets these days. Last time I looked R13s were $4200. Now they are just north of $4400 for silver keys.

What can you do? The cost of living never goes DOWN. Back in the 1920's you could get a decent steak dinner for $1.50.

Reminds me of when Boosey & Hawkes prices were always increasing in the 1970s. Like hyperinflation. Quality moving in the opposite direction.

I've posted before my Buffet purchases (R13) new.
1971 $250 US
1979 $520 Canadian
1999 $2,000 US
A player in the band where I play bought one new for $6K US (maybe not R13?)
Yet, I bought a new Selmer student model in 2018 for $165 Canadian (usually these & Yamaha student ones are about $400-500-- not much more than in 1980).
Guess the prices simply reflect what one is willing to pay?
