Are you as dumb as me?

Just looking through Ebay and found a guy selling a B & H Fogware clarinet. Made me laugh because he had 2 of them for sale and both listed as Fogware. On examination the way they're engraved looks like it could be Fogware. Most telling reason is there's no "E" after the "G". Then I noticed on other listings for B & H Edgeware, that there is NO "E" following the "G" in any of them. Conclusion is that the right way of spelling Edgeware is EDGWARE. Yet all of us clarinet folks spell it with an "E" after the "G". Dang I feel stupid for not noticing this proper spelling all these years. How 'bout you?

Ah well, even people in the London area get that wrong! (Edgware being a northern suburb of London where B & H had their works at one time).

John,

Wow, do you know how many people are making this same advertising mistake? I found 10 EDGEWARE clarinets on that auction site as well as several on Reverb and where pictures were clear enough to read, the name on ALL of the clarinets was EDGWARE!

Here's a nice, clearly readable one from Reverb: https://reverb.com/item/40800384-boosey-hawkes-edgeware-clarinet-completely-overhauled-with-original-m-p-ligature-cap

I have yet to find an ad for an EDGWARE clarinet.

So, how did I miss this? Easy...I simply accepted the ad name and never bothered to look at the name on the clarinet.

Okay, so that's my excuse. What excuses do the untold number of advertisers have to use the wrong spelling?

Good find, John!

By the way, EDGEWARE does exist:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgeware

John,

I did another search on that auction site only this time in the U.K. There, I found 18 for the Edgware and 3 for the Edgeware.

Interesting, huh? It appears that when those clarinets crossed the pond, the appropriate name somehow changed.

Well, it's "...as dumb as I."

(Sorry, but I couldn't resist.)
