 Buffet Equivalent of Selmer Privilege

Which Buffet Crampon clarinet is the most comparable to a Selmer Privilege? How similar is a Buffet Tradition? (context: I'm considering buying a second hand Privilege A clarinet, and I already have a Bb Tradition and love it)

Here's something to think about. Most clarinetists will try to find a pair of clarinets that are as close to one another as possible. But many composers write for the A clarinet when they want a distinct and darker sound compared to the Bb. Given this, shouldn't clarinetists try to find an A clarinet that is as distinct from our Bb clarinets as possible in order to highlight this difference?

In any case, I wouldn't worry about which model is closest to the Privilege. If you like your Bb Tradition and like the Privilege A then there is no reason not to use them together.

If that's not a satisfying answer, I would say the Tosca is much closer than the Tradition, but again don't worry about it too much.

I LOVED the “older” Privileges (the ones that DON’T have the Superman “S” on them). They had lots of gusto and blended well with Buffets (at least the R13s). The key work may be the biggest hurdle though. They feel quite different.

For key work and ease of resistance, I’d suggest the Yamaha CSG.

Every clarinet is different. If you're considering a specific Privilege A, then you can judge your own comfort level with it. If you can't try it before buying, I think I'd move on.

IMO, no. If there's a universal difference in the characteristic sounds of Bb and A clarinets, then that's all a composer should expect. A player who looks for a match between an A and a Bb is, I think, looking for two instruments that respond and tune similarly and whose key and tone-hole placements are as like each other as possible.

I don't know how the Privilege A compares in these respects to a Tradition Bb.

I'm a Selmer guy, I love the Privilège, and the only Buffet-Crampon I'm in love with is the Buffet Tradition, IMHO the Tradition has the punch, the core sound, like a Selmer.

I can't say any particular model is much more similar, but they are all pretty similar in that they are "regular" French clarinets.

I really like the Privilege (both versions), it's my favourite Selmer clarinet (I've tried all current models and most if not all older models too), and the Tradition is my favourite Buffet model... at least some of them.
