 D'Addario "Venn" Synthetic Reed
Author: Tony F

Does anybody have experience of the D'Addario "Venn" synthetic clarinet reed? I've used Legeres for some years and like them, but I'm always interested in new ways. Do these compare with Legere?
Thanks.

I bought one to try and was not impressed. it was slightly softer as a legere of the same strength but without being more responsive. Tone was brash and bright, like a fibracell but harder to play.
others may have had better luck...

Thanks for that. I read some ealier comments from when they first came out which seem to mirror your experience. I was hoping that they might have improved since then, but maybe not.

I wrote about this in a previous thread. I tried them early on and thought they were lousy. I later received a few of the "improved" version to test. (happily I did not pay for those) I really did not detect any improvement. I really felt they were barely playable.

I tried one recently and my experience is pretty much the same. It's hard to explain but the venn is just so much more effort to play, and it's not a matter of the reed being too hard for the mouthpiece. I think the plastic layer on the flat side absorbs a lot of energy; peeling it off (which you're not supposed to do) helped a little bit, but it's still not great.

I tried them when they first came out. Horrible. Just horrible. If they have a newer version I hope they are better. Sticking to my Legere.

I tried them - wrote them how horrible I felt they played and they made adjustments and a couple of Months later sent me a new batch.

We a little better but still not for me. However some like them, so it’s still all about “what works for you”. And the Mouthpiece can make a big difference also. Silverstein synth reeds never hit my radar as being good for me either. I have over 10 of them. Was an original tester too.

Something for everyone!

I do believe this is the most consensus I have ever experienced on this forum. D'Addario take note!

FWIW- I got an email from D'Addario about their Venn reeds

Quote:

VENN is back and better than ever. We’ve implemented some major changes to create our groundbreaking synthetic reed. VENN combines the stability and longevity of a synthetic reed with the sound and feel of natural cane. With the design upgrades, VENN is now even closer to a premium cane reed than anyone thought possible—increased flexibility, greater clarity, wider dynamics, plus more responsiveness and resonance.

I know that previously they said that they improved them. I am not sure if there have been further modifications or this is just a marketing email trying to encourage people to try them. The statements made are pretty general so there is no real info.

I will say that I like the developments using new technology and products, but I tried previous versions of these and found them unusable. I am hoping they have made further tweaks and improved them.
