John Moses and Rhapsody in Blue
Author: Clarence Beale
Date:   2022-04-12 21:37

Someone created a YouTube channel called “George Silfies” and posted four “videos” in which George purportedly played the clarinet. Actually, the “videos” are just audio recordings of the Saint Louis Symphony. One of the “videos” was the Saint Louis Symphony recording of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with Leonard Slatkin, conductor, and Jeffrey Siegel, pianist. It is claimed that George Silfies was the clarinetist on that recording. Wrong! The clarinetist was John Moses. John was the Principal Clarinet at the Saint Louis Symphony for the 1969-70 season, and the Slatkin/Siegel Rhapsody in Blue recording was made that season. George began his 34 year tenure as Principal Clarinet at the SLSO in the fall of 1970.

Does anyone know who created the “George Silfies” YouTube channel? I can’t find any information on YouTube about who created the channel, and comments have been turned off. I think the misidentification needs to be corrected. (If you don’t find the “video” on YouTube then it has been removed after I wrote this message.)

Incidentally, I contacted the Saint Louis Symphony Organization and asked what the exact recording date was of the Slatkin/Siegel Rhapsody in Blue recording. Their response was they have no records of the recording date for that recording. That I find hard to believe.

Under "INFORMATION" the post claims that the recording was released in 1974.

Further though if we don't know the exact date, how would we know it was during the '69-'70 Season?

Whoever it is, it is a GREAT rendition.

John Moses told me that he was the principal clarinetist on the Slatkin/Siegel SLSO Rhapsody in Blue recording. He said the recording was made during the 1969-70 season. John is alive and alert and would be happy to tell you the same.
