I have recently acquired a Jeffrey wood clarinet, serial number 8912, made in France.
Does anyone know any info about this clarinet brand? I can't find info anywhere!

Thank You!

The Jeffrey was the entry-level wooden clarinet offered by Leblanc in the mid-1960s. It carried the Model 3 designation in the Leblanc France lineup.

The Jeffrey utilizes the upper-joint keywork of the Normandy Model 6, which has angled, Buffet-style trill keys versus the "Jump" trill keys found on other Normandy models. It also uses "Chiclet" style touchpieces on the the lower-joint spatula keys, as used on the last run of the Normandy Model 7. Both of these were cost-saving measures carried over to the Jeffrey.

Leblanc did splurge a bit by equipping the Jeffrey with a wooden bell. The Normandy 6 and 7, which immediately preceded the Jeffrey, had composite bells, with the Model 6 also sporting a composite barrel.

Serial number analysis shows that both the Normandy 6 and 7 went out of production in 1964 or perhaps 1965. By 1966, the Jeffrey 3 was on the Normandy/Noblet price list, making it the de facto replacement for the Normandy 6 and 7.

Your Jeffrey shares its .584" bore and acoustic design with all the Normandy B-flat clarinets, and with Noblet Models 40 and 45. All of these models were somewhat variable in quality, but the great majority of them would rate as at least decent clarinets.

Be sure to carefully check the intonation of the throat tones when evaluating a mouthpiece with your Jeffrey, as a mismatched mouthpiece will result in sharpness in that range.

Best wishes for a lifetime of enjoyment with your new-to-you Jeffrey!
