It shouldn’t be hard to find a basic neck strap that works but somehow the two I’ve purchased don’t work. I have an old Selmer series 9 bass clarinet and need recommendations on neck straps that will work for playing sitting down. I must have accidentally purchased a Bb neck strap or something…can someone recommend a basic one please that will reach all the way to my bass? Thanks! Eliza

My Series 9 has two rings and I use a BG strap with two hooks. Although I use a floor peg as well, the two hook configuration really holds your bass securely when seated without a peg and when standing. It eliminates the tendency of the bass to pivot on a single hook.

invest in a peg! makes all the difference in the world. you will play much better with out voicing issues and squeeks and squawks. i cant stress this enough.

Yeah, I had to have my repair guy add a peg to the bell joint of my Series 9 bass too, on the urgent insistence of my then-Broadway doubler teacher. Any high quality 2-hook strap plus a peg (fitted to the metal tenon, not the wood body), and crook your right ankle behind the peg so the bass doesn't travel, use your left knee to brace the horn, and you should be fine in anything short of a typhoon.

I have a peg for my alto plus a jazzlab.com shoulder brace strap.
It is very stable and comfortable and puts the weight on the shoulders not the neck. Also I have long hair and the 2 arms of the brace can be put on by clipping them in toward my shoulders rather than putting a loop over my head and getting it caught in my hair. If I have to play standing up, the jazzlab is definitely better than a loop strap. Sitting down I still prefer it to a strap for its easy on and off.
The jazzlab is a bit more cumbersome as it can not be completely squished up like a strap, but it folds neatly and small enough to fit in the outside pocket of the case.

There is a thread on Bass Clarinet straps if you do a search.
However, I came up with a different solution. Checkout this strap from Michael Drapkin. https://www.bassclarinet.net/product/strap/ It's a crossbody strap that works well with my bass clarinets (Selmer 65 and a black Espressivo Low C). I have a black one but there are many colors; I did change the hook to a snap hook which is much more secure. Both of my basses have a single ring on the lower section.
But I also use a peg so that things are very stable.
