Many Charms of the Chalumeau in 3 Sizes
Author: seabreeze

Katherine Spenser of the Age of Enlightenment Orchestra reveals the many forgotten charms of the Chalumeau in three different pitch sizes. It wasn't just sitting around waiting for the clarinet to be invented. It had a music and a following of its own, was beloved by many composers, and may still be worth playing and listening to today. This eye-opening presentation is the most engaging I've seen on one of our instrument's progenitors.

seabreeze, thanks for the link. I thoroughly enjoyed the warm sound of the period instrument.

Out of curiosity, I decided to see if I could find one for sale and, of course, I looked towards Amazon. Yep, it was there: https://www.amazon.com/WOODI-Chalumeau-WCL-71-Pocket-Clarinet/dp/B00KY8AIAK/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1IVVWBDU8ZDMN&keywords=chalumeau+instrument&qid=1645337538&sprefix=the+Chalumeau%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-4

Also interesting to note is that towards the bottom of the ad I saw a box of Vandoren Blue Box 1.5 clarinet reeds. I looked for what kind of mouthpiece is shown in the picture but I couldn't find any particular description.

I had no idea that these instruments were even available and at such a reasonable price!

The Jupiter Saxonette is also the same thing - probably what the Woodi USA one is based on.

The issue is if you want to play the repertoire you need an instrument with 2 keys. Those keyless instruments are great for teaching young students but unfortunately they just don't really have the range to play most music that was actually written for the instrument. I ran into this issue with my friend when they were playing a few Telemann pieces, most literature seems to take advantage of the two extra keys, and playing the notes down the octave sounded very out of place. I ended up finding them a "Yan Clarino" which had 3 keys giving it the range it needed while still using a modern clarinet mouthpiece. We also looked into period correct copies but the cheapest we found at the time was $900 which was out of the budget for the project. It really is a beautiful sound and I wish it was more common to see chalumeaux in baroque groups.

Unfortunately it looks like they changed the material, mine was made of rosewood. Still a great deal.

Kunath in Fulda, Germany are offering "Clarineaux" without or with three keys in 440 Hz, prices depending on wood sort, and a Soprano Chalumeau in 442 Hz with three keys.

Maybe I'm imagining it, but I thought the Jupiter ones originally had a throat A key.

The Guntram Wolf ones do, only the links don't work:

Avoid the ones made by Moeck (they stopped production some years ago but still a few floating around) as they are junk.
For a hand made instrument at reasonable price try Soren Green.

Assuming the Woodi chalumeau from amazon.com is the same as the Jupiter saxonette from amazon.co.uk, the exchange rate appears to be $1=£1.

Also, Andrew Doyle in Sydney is making Chalumeau now- both "historical" ones, AND ones for beginners/children to use as their first instrument (modern clarinet mouthpiece).

Also, if you look up "The Shawm Shop" online, you'll see that Erik Martens makes chalumeaux. He offers both soprano and alto versions, with two keys as an option. And the soprano is available at A415; it's not clear from the website whether the alto also is.

The fingering chart on the website leaves it unclear whether the keyed instruments are fully chromatic, since some notes are omitted.
