Would love to find some history of the Paris instrument manufacturers -- beyond the brief and careless histories found on their websites. I do have The New Langwill. But I'd love to learn of the existence of a book that gives a bit more history. *That* would be my dream Christmas present!

Bill, yes, that would make for an interesting books. You said Paris, but actually most clarinet builders were in or around Mantes-la-Jolie, around 60 kilometers west of Paris. The reason for this is because boxwood grew there. It was used for making chairs...and woodwind instruments. There is only one craftsman clarinet maker in or around Paris: Daniel Joye of JL Clarinettes, whom I work with. The are still a couple of producers of period instrument makers: making bassoons, recorders, flutes and oboes. Two people very near Paris making HIP clarinets.
