 Dating bottom logo buffet mouthpieces
Author: kchan 2017

Folks,
I've read on the bb that wood bottom logo buffet mouthpieces come from the 20s-30s. Any idea when the bottom logo buffet ebonite mouthpieces date from? Are they Lelandais?

Thanks!
Ken

Don't exactly know.
But Buffet offered them as options in 1915 according to this catalog excerpt. Notice that there's a crystal mpc available too.

If you bought a clarinet with 2 wood mpcs, you had to option of swapping it out for 1 rubber one for an add'l $1.25.

The old bottom logo Buffet mouthpieces were most likely made by Chedeville-Lelandais. I found that the baffle-throat configuration can vary drastically, but the material is consistently of a high quality. If you can find one for an affordable price and have it refaced, it has a good chance to be a keeper.

I agree with the poster who said the interior dimensions can be all over the map. The one I have that came with my 21xxx Buffet is one of the best mpcs I own: ***narrow*** throat opening, scooped like a cereal bowl. Vytas Krass refaced it fairly early (?) in his career and said it was (at that time) one of the best projects he had done. That being said, if at gunpoint I had to choose one mpc, it would be one of the old *wooden* Buffets.
