Backofen - piece for basset horn and Harp
Author: donald
Date:   2022-02-06 10:19

I've been trying to buy this piece with not much luck... It is a two mvt piece for Basset Horn and Harp. I've played it (on clarinet) with a Harp playing friend about 20 years ago, but her music was lost some years ago when Christchurch suffered a destructive earthquake!!!!!
If anyone can help connect me with the music I will then share a clarinet (and I'm thinking of a Bass clarinet transcription) of the Solo part.
Also considering turning the Harp part into 3 strings to make a clarinet quartet version...

You can get the Concertante for Bassethorn and Harp from Kunzelmann Editions.

See:
https://www.kunzelmann.ch/en_euro/concertante.html

SheetMusicPlus does not seem to have it in stock, so depending on your location it might be expensive to order.

I think have the notes to this, but maybe I’m confused: Is there also a set of pieces by Backofen for clarinet and harp, and - if so - is that just an adaptation or alternate arrangement of the b-horn piece, or a different work entirely?

Whatever it is that I’ve got, it’s filed away somewhere, but I think I can find it with a little searching. I vaguely recall that it’s for clarinet in B-flat - not b-horn, so maybe not the same as what you’re looking for.
I recall exploring these pieces many years ago with my wife, who just happens to be a harpist. We agreed they were pretty disappointing and never took further interest in them.

Backofen’s quintet for basset-horn and strings, on the other hand, is a sublimely wonderful piece, so if there is indeed a work for b-horn and harp which is different from the piece we previously tried, maybe it too is better, in which case I’d be most interested as well!

Yes that's the piece! I've only seen a basset horn part for that (and years ago played off a hand written Bb part). It IS 20 years since I played it but I recall it being quite good quality music (not Mozart, but better than Karl Stamitz).

Kia ora, the Mohler edition is a transcription of tge basset horn part for Bb clarinet. I'm intending to buy this, but the postage/shipping costs are ridiculous to NZ at the moment as there are limited flights in and out due to covid (this is why USPS won't send to NZ/Australia at the moment).
I've just transcribed the solo part for an Alto sax student, if anyone can send me a pdf of the harp part for the 1st mvt that would be great. I promise I'll buy it eventually....

Donald,

Some ideas, and a correction:
I may have been mistaken in my earlier remarks about having (long ago) tried out this piece and being dissappointed by it. A sample page of the score I found online does not resemble what remember of the piece - it was a LONG time ago...
I think I might have the name Backofen confused with either Bochsa or with another figure in the harp world.
Whatever the confusion or explanation, please disregard my earlier negative remarks.

You might have some success finding this work in a library and borrowing it via inter-library loan. I can't speak from experience of NZ, but here in the USA inter-library loan can sometimes be an almost magical resource, giving one access to obscure and far-flung resources, delivered right to one's local library, big or small.

I see that there's a copy at least as near to you as Australia ('near' being a very relative term here...):

https://www.worldcat.org/title/concertante-fur-harfe-oder-klavier-und-bassetthorn-violoncello-ad-lib-concertante-for-harp-or-piano-and-corno-bassetto-violocello-sic-ad-lib/oclc/35036827&referer=brief_results

This listing is for an edition of the original for basset-horn.

Searches for the Mohler edition to which you refer are complicated/corrupted somewhat by the fact that the composer's name is mis-spelt "Bachofen" on the cover, leading some librarians to catalog the item under that name - so you must search for both spellings.

In case anyone is interested, here are some parts for the first movement (allegro) arranged for clarinet and for Alto sax. I've not added any articulations other than those from Backofen, leaving a lot of the piece open for the performer to edit themselves.
I've done these parts to use with students- and it is a great exercise in lessons to write in articulation etc throughout the piece and discuss these interpretations with the student.

Donald, any chance you have the harp score? I just happen to play a bit of harp and am delighted with this piece. (I looked in world score but the closest to me are in Germany and I don't speak or read German)

A harp playing friend has just replied that she can send me a pdf of the harp part sometime in the next week or so... I'll keep you posted
