 selmer c* for alto clarinet
Author: super20dan

i picked up a selmer c* in execellent shape recently and have struggled to find reeds soft enough for it. usually c* is a very closed facing and can use at least a med strength reed . this one needs very soft reeds to blow normaly. i had to drop down to a legere american cut 1.5! however the tone is marvelous . dark and very rich. much better than my other mpcs. tune well with room on eiether side of a440 so its going to be a keeper despite being so resistant

You didn't buy that one from 1800USABand on eBay did you? It appeared to be refaced and modified in a very poor manner.

My C* worked great with Vandoren 3 reeds.

I don't think the alto c* were very consistent.
Mine looked fine but had a very uneven facing, warped actually, that had to be redone.

For me, the American Cut were very too hard compared to same number on Signature which I prefer.

Glad you found a good C*, when they are good they are very good.

thanks -this may explain why the american cut is so hard. i ordered a 1.75 and a1.50 and can play the 1.50 fine. i am not going to mess with my c*,s facing as it plays good as is.

first rehearsal on the c* -its awesume ! putting the other mpcs in drawer . volume using the american cut legere is incredible. can hold own with the brass on the parts the alto clarinet usually gets

I've found both Vandoren 1.5 and Rico 1.5 reeds to be pretty decent with my alto clarinet. I've been told that the Vandoren 1.5 are more like 2 from other brands. Using anything higher than a 2 on an alto loses the rich tone of the instrument.

i tend to agree. on a hard reed the tone sound more like a Bb clarinet. the alto has a unique voice that i just love

I have two C* for my alto clarinet, more or less the same sound design, but there are indeed some differences, one feels a bit softer (it was the stock mouthpiece for my Selmer alto clarinet, now it's my spare mpc), the other punchier (found it on the net, and now my main mpc). Both are very comfortable.

Dan, I believe that the Selmer C*(1.60 opening) is rather open compared certain other alto mpcs such as those by Vandoren(max. 1.40 opening), which may explain why you need to use softer reeds than you did before(though not sure what mpc you were previously using). This is somehow the anomaly with the alto C* as C*s for other members of the clarinet family are relatively closed compared to other mpcs on the market like you've said.

FYI: Dan- The B44's opening is around 1.38(*around aka some variations may occur during production) which is waaay closer than the C* which I've mentioned has a 1.60 opening. In general the Selmer alto openings are much bigger than Vandoren's, and ditto with Clark Fobes's alto pieces.
