 Gregory Smith mouthpieces

Anyone know if he is still making them, or found a new material? I'm interested in trying some different Eb mouthpieces and I love my Smith Bb piece I bought several years ago.

Barring that, I'm waiting for Grabner's new model, which he said is a few weeks off, and also considering Behn and Fobes. Any opinions on the latter two? I have a Noblet and am currently using a Backun I have on semi permanent loan. I like it but want to make sure I find the best combo for the instrument. I don't like Vandorens and didn't like the Hite.

I played Eb for the San Diego Symphony from 1975-85 using a Kanter mouthpiece. I haven’t played Eb much since but currently really like the Vandoren BD5 and M30 Eb mouthpieces. (Neither are really like their Bb counterparts). Most of my colleagues like either the (old) Grabner or Fobes.

I haven’t tried the Backun, Behn or Smith, but if you have the money, I’m sure they are good pieces.

Brad Behn refaced a Zinner E flat blank for me in 1996 and in all those years I've never found anything that works better. Over the years it has twice been lent out to players (including a former Principal of NZSO) who offered to buy it off me, and, how can I put this, "delayed" returning it ;-)

I have a Greg Smith Eb mouthpiece and LOVE it. He sent barrel/ mouthpiece combos that helped too. I play a Tosca Eb.

I have Fobes and Grabner mouthpieces and use them on all my other horns but I prefer the Smith on my Eefer. I have not tried the new generation Fobes, Grabner or Behn mouthpieces but will probably give them a try too.

Since I have refaced mouthpieces since the mid 1960' but only for myself and my students. I refaced an old Bundy Eb to match the facing of my Kasper Bb so I can use the same reeds on either. On some reeds I had to narrow the Eb reeds a bit, but it is easier to have good reeds for both at the same time.

Maybe a good refacer can do that for you?

I have used the Fobes Eb mouthpiece. It is a really good mouthpiece in all respects- tuning, sound, response. Clark really knows his stuff and his equipment is well worth trying. He is also great at responding to questions and can help you find what will work best for you.

Greg Smith is still second with the CSO and probably would answer a direct message either through his website or something like Facebook messenger.

If someone gets the answer, please ask for permission to post and then post here. I'd love to know the answer as well.

Getting him to reface a mouthpiece for you would be a great idea IF you can get someone to measure your current Bb and Eb mouthpieces to give him an idea what you're comfortable with.
The other problem with this is finding a blank- you quite clearly prefer Zinner family blanks but that would be hard to find...
Ken Lagace - I've been thinking of trying the OPPOSITE for many years, and putting the facing of my Behn/Zinner eefer mouthpiece on to a Bb blank to see how it plays...
