How important is the E/F bell mechanism on german clarinets? Is it really necessary to have this mechanism?
TIA

It is absolutely needed on German bore instruments. My Wurlitzer lacks the correction key and the low E is almost 30 cents flat. Low F is better at 15-20 cents flat but still quite bad. I mostly play Boehm system anyway so it generally sits in its case, but if I were to play it in any public setting I would likely go through the trouble of adding the correction key.

Interesting... It's possible to add the mechanism to a clarinet which doesn't already have it?

The whole gizm is basically just another big hole added to the bell (and two posts) along with a long key triggered by the thumb (four posts, one set close to the thumb, the other set at the base of the lower joint). So just the complication of tapping for the posts, and drilling (and counter sinking) the hole in the bell.
Or you could make sure you order your clarinet with the extra vent mechanism already installed.
