 Süssmayr Concerto
Author: Cdh

Although Süssmayr did complete a basset clarinet concerto for Anton Stadler, unfortunately it is lost. There are 2 incomplete autograph manuscripts in the British Library. I have made a completion which is suitable for modern or period instruments. There is also a version for regular clarinet in A. Free download on the historical clarinets website:

The character of the piece is noble and joyous, and seems to take its cue from Mozart's opera 'La Clemenza di Tito', for which Süssmayr probably composed the secco recitatives. In the development section Süssmayr's sketches are very fragmentary. One of the themes bears an affinity with the Queen of the Night aria from The Magic Flute, and so I have allowed the completion to take a little inspiration from Mozart's aria.

He's a lot more than the guy who completed Mozart's Requiem!
