The great conductor, Bernard Haitink, has left us. I have wonderful memories of him conducting the Concertgebouw, the London Philharmonic and our Orchestre National de France, that revered him. Every time he conducted here in Paris, it was a red-letter day for musicians and audiences alike. A long, worthwhile existence and a towering artistic figure.

In one performance of an opera with maestro Haitink I had an experience which I have never had with any other conductor:

I had a short lyrical solo in Parsifal. At some point during the solo Haitink made a gesture which forced me to react with spontaneous dynamic and rubato adjustments. A moment after that event I remember thinking: "Wow, that was really beautiful!". I hadn't planned to do it, Haitink just brought it out of me. It was a singular moment in my career where I felt that I was "played" by a conductor in such a way that I produced something greater than that which I could possibly have done on my own.

 Thank you maestro.

Dear Liquorice: Parsifal with you was, I believe, the last opera maestro Haitink ever performed. He went back exclusively to symphonic work after that. Thank you for this memory.
