Funk good in Music, not on the Instrument!
Author: Ben Shaffer

So I bought a used grenadilla wood keyless Irish Flute
The bore has a funk smell, but not the cork
I assume the previous Player did not swab the Flute and thus has maybe some Bacteria or mold growth ( the Flute, not the Player :) )
Question, how do you get rid of the smell?
Ive used 70% Alcohol, Baking Soda and sweet Almond Oil the smell has only gone away alittle with these treatments
I'm leaving the Flute open to room air.
I've gotten rid of the soft sided case which smelled even worse!
So what to do next?
There is Sterisol, but I don't know if that can be used in a wood Bore :( Suggestions would be appreciated!

Once, when I was having a tech work on a grenadilla oboe that I played a lot, he used a stiff brush to clean what he called tartar out of the bore. Meaning, I assume, accumulated crud from my saliva. This removed a good deal of grayish solid material.

The safest way would be to take the flute to a tech. As for doing it yourself, I would defer to posters who have tech experience, but if they think it's OK, you could try it. My tech put the brush in the chuck of a lathe, but presumably it could also be done by hand.

It was certainly not a metal brush! Possibly a brush with plastic bristles could work. However, it would be important to select one of a small enough diameter that it doesn't jam in the bore of the flute. Also note that most such brushes have bare metal showing at the tip- potentially this could scratch the bore if the brush did not remain straight.
